Ça ne fonctionne pas non plus chez moi, avec du .wav.
Par contre j'ai testé avec un .ogg, et ça fonctionne bien. C'est étrange, peut-être une évolution de Thunderbird.
PS : D'ailleurs en regardant la source du fichier de notification (message.ogg) :
