The following did the trick.
deleted /var/lib/gconf/une.mandatory/%gconf-tree.xml
NOW I can mod as I see fit to. Still ... it's a PITA.
J'ai perdu le bureau !!!
Comment faire pour le récupérr svp, sans tout ré-installer :/
