Hi there!
October 11th is International Coming Out Day. While I've already been
"out" to my friends and family for a while, I wanted to make it a little
more public this year, so I'm coming out at work, too. Specifically, I
identify as polyamorous, and as a member of the Leather (aka "BDSM")
community. (Wikipedia is your friend if you don't know what those terms
mean, and are interested).
I haven't had any issues personally with my orientations at Mozilla:
it's been a great work environment for me, and my personal life rarely
comes up. But I have friends in other occupations (one is a
schoolteacher, for instance) who don't feel they have the same freedom
to come out that I'm exercising right now. And there are still many
places where living a non-monogamous and/or sexually non-traditional
lifestyle can result in harsh outcomes in child custody cases,
employment discrimination situations, health care visitation rights, etc.
So this message is one part a chance to just be public about who I am
and how I live (I'm happy to talk more individually to anyone who's
curious), and one part a very small--but hopefully not entirely
meaningless--gesture to support my community, and the principle that
people should be allowed to have whatever sort of personal
relationship(s) they choose.
Hmm, I see that Thunderbird's spell-checker considers "transgendered" a
word, but not "polyamorous." An interesting index for measuring social
change 🙂
Thanks for reading, and have a nice day.
